SEGA Vs. Nintendo

Remember when Sonic and Mario went head to head? Video game rivalries are no joke, especially considering the billions of dollars up for grabs for the console with the most successful games. Back when Sega was hawking a blue hedgehog and Nintendo was promoting their plumber, it was hard to tell who was winning. Find out what was going on behind the scenes in this episode of Play Value.

I really can't figure out why some of the hosts continue to insist that failed consoles aren't redeeming in any way. Sega CD was most certainly a blunder and the start of many blunders from Sega, but to claim "every game on it is terrible" is an asinine exaggeration. Arguably the best Sonic game, Sonic CD, arguably one of the best games of ALL time, Snatcher (the only English localization being on Sega CD), Robo Aleste, Final Fight CD (a much better port) and a number of RPGs including Shining Force CD, Lunar and Lunar 2, Vay, and Popful Mail. Never mind a host of ports with improved sound.

A failed console? Yes. A very limited selection of games? Yes. No good games? Give me a break. You guys gave the same treatment to consoles in your "Failed Consoles" series, despite the fact that even systems as terrible as the Atari Jaguar even have a few good games. Give credit where credit is due, at least.

The 32X, though, is indeed almost wholly terrible.

yeah the Wii has existed for 10 years

I've got a very curious question... Sega really went into a battle with Nintendo in America. Did Sega made all these kind of stuff to Nintendo in Japan?

not really. Sega didn't ever really have a chance in Japan. The big battle was in America.

I'm not sure how the Mega Drive sold in Japan, but systems like Saturn were successful in Japan and enjoyed a robust lifespan, unlike in the US.

Nintendo rocks!

Woo! They refrenced Michael Jackson's Moonwalker!

I don't know why, but I think that Sega is more...more... more...smarter...powerful... than Nintendo. Nintendo has Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, but Nintendo has even Castlevania, MegaMan, Bionic Commando etc. , which are 3rd party games... Sega fought back, with might and courage and made their own games!!!

Sorry to say, but I think youre a Sega fan... I don't think Sega is smart, they are dumb, they killed themselves...But Nintendo made the best games ever:)
Nintendo is fun, sega sucks (now, i would give sonic the hedgehog an 8:) (but super mario bros. an 10:)))

"Nintendo is what Genesis isn't" I've never heard oof that Ad before. I don't think Nintendo would do something like that. The only thing I have ever seen close to doing that was their Star Fox 64 promo video

Oh, they did it! Nintendo doesn't really publicly attack like that, but these were special circumstances.

Really? wow 0_o

Sonic cd was a great game........

Who is faith even talking to?

Ah I miss Sega :(. I wish they'd come back into the console business. They only died because of marketing mistakes. Now that they've watched other companies like Microsoft and Nintendo, they really should jump back in.

Just wanted to add one correction to an otherwise fine episode. "Sega Institute" was actually called "Sega Technical Institute". I do appreciate you saying we made excellent games though. It was fun to see some of the games again in the video.

Thanks for the comment and for the nice words. Of course, you are right, and it's a correction worth mentioning. Boy, I loved those games (I was a big Genesis guy). It's nice to have some people that we're actually behind the games come on and give their two cents. Thanks again for stopping by.

I'm going to have to disagree with him saying there were no decent games at all on the Sega CD, Sonic CD, Final Fight CD and Snatcher are all time faves amongst gamers on the system. And while it did have what ammounts to second-hand shovel ware like Night Trap and Sherlock Holmes from abandoned VHS/CD consoles, it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.

I love Night Trap

I know how you feel. I liked Sonic CD a lot. But the few good ones they had were just buried under so much garbage.

Oh definetly, i'd go as far as to say that Sonic CD was the greatest 2D Sonic game ever made (well between that and Sonic 2)

100% I agree. It was the best sonic ever! Oh how I miss good sonic games...

The problem with Sega is they keep turning 3D Sonic games into uncontrollable, glitchy Rollercoaster sims, when they should be somewhere between Tony Hawks and Prince of Persia in gameplay.

But they've really damaged the Hedgehog's reputation, they should give him a rest for a while (like they did in the Saturn years) and resseurect their original mascot, Alex Kidd!!!

I totally agree. The EA exclusive license deal set the stage for a lack a innovation big time. NFL 2K5 was revolutionary for the price. I was so angry when the NFL signed the exclusive EA deal. If there's one lesson anyone can learn by watching all these shows, it's that competition is always good for the industry and always grows the market and leads to more creativity.

Oooh! That's another great idea for the show... the fight over the NFL license. I think most would agree that NFL 2K5 was one of the finest games of football ever created, and the low-ball price made it even more of a contender. EA's response was extreme, and may have set the stage for a lack of true innovation in football games.

Sorry about the wait for the new episodes! I promise to try not to let it happen again. Personally I was a Genesis guy, not a SNES guy, and Sega's downfall broke my heart. It's true that it's been a looong time since a good Sonic game came out. In fact, a lot of Sega Genesis charaters didn't age too well. They were all very "extreme", "rad", and bunch of other early 90's stuff that time wasn't too kind to. Mario titles, by contrast, have aged much better. I, too, wish I had more than 8 minutes to get into these topics. I'd love 20 mintues to be able to explore how Sega of Japan made bad decision after bad decision that ultimately doomed Sega, and how Sega had the genesis, the nomad, the game gear, the pico, the 32x, the sega cd, and the saturn all out at the same time, as well as a few arcade boards. There was no way any company could support so many incompatible systems at the same time with decent software. Anyway, we shall seee if the powers that be will eventually expand the show into something more in depth! Oh, and as for the game gear, yeah, they'll be a handheld episode coming up that will go into the gameboy and the nomad and the Lynx, as well. In Sega's defense, they did continue to make GREAT football titles for other hardware, until EA signed an exclusive liscence deal with the NFL. That boxed SEGA out, and left the Madden franchise as the only game in town. Damn, SEGA can't catch a break!

Oh Sega! Where would we be if you had not screwed up?!

I could still kick myself for buy the 32x at release.
Oh well

poor sega when will they learn...lol

Terrific episode highlighting one of the best rivalries that ended with the most unlikely of alliances. It's a shame that Sega is out of the hardware business, since Sega was responsible for so many great games when they were publishing for their own hardware. Now, as a developer for other systems, they've stagnated, and significantly fallen behind the curve when it comes to game design. I mean, when is the last time we saw a good Sonic game?

One of the missed opportunities, however, was a discussion about Sega's foray into the handheld battle, with the Game Gear and the all-but-forgotten Nomad. Perhaps a topic for another episode on the Gameboy.

Please don't let it be another month before we see another installment of this series, and please, PLEASE, consider making longer episodes... 8 minutes can cover a lot of ground, but episodes closer to 30 minutes would really allow for your panel to delve more deeply into the issues, and would really transform this series from a video brochure to a full-on newsmagazine.

Keep up the great work!!!
